I am a solo librarian in a tiny town, tiny library. One of my patrons came in and said her son wanted a book but she couldn't remember what book it was. She knew it was not Captain Underpants, and for sure had the word Dummies in the title. After thinking for just a moment, I said "Diary of a Wimpy Kid?" The next part is the good part; she said "Yes!" and then threw herself on her knees in a "We're not worthy" posture and said "Library Goddess, Library Goddess". I love being a goddess, I mean librarian! |

So I am applying to UIUC for fall 2010, got told that I have to take the GRE because of my GPA... has anyone gotten into UIUC after being told they have to take the GRE? Any advice would be wonderful. I am really nervous and would live to here from anyone that has gotten into UIUC, or my second choice Dominican U. How hard is it to get into either? And get a job after? I would really like to stay in IL after the MLIS. Thanks! |

| Lily Bard Series Xposted |

Shakespeare's Champion (Lily Bard Mysteries, Book 2)
3/5 You can find my review for book one here. Lily Bard's life in the small town of shakespeare seems to get hectic at times. One day, at her normal work out place, Lily goes to open it for her friend. She finds the door unlocked and gets inside only to discover the body of a town member. This has been the third death in the past couple of months so Lily finds herself wondering if it was an accident. While Lily is trying to put the pieces together for this puzzle, little blue papers start turning up around town. The papers are suggesting that the white people want to take back what is theirs. Lily is disgusted and very confused on what is happening to her small town. She cant help but feel suspicous about a new comer in town. He is tall with dark hair and very mysterious. He keeps popping up with the strange events going on too. Although she feels he might not be as innocent as everyone else thinks, she cant help but feel warmth overcome certain areas when she is around him. This makes it really hard for Lily to stay concentrated on what is going on in her town.
I enjoyed this one a lot more than the other. I felt like there were a lot more events going on. I also find myself reading for who Lily is and not so much about the story. Its nice to read about a strong women sometimes.
( Book 3-5 under here. ) |

| The Spetacular City by Daniel Goldstein |
[Nov. 13th, 2009|09:17 pm] |
|
The Spectacular City by Daniel Goldstein Summary: Daniel Goldstein’s ethnography, The Spectacular City, analyzes the indigenous migrants of Villa Pagador in Cochabamba. He uses the occurrence of the Fiesta de San Miguel and the staged lynching of would-be thieves to exhibit how the migrants seek attention and acknowledgement from government officials. Opinion: I only read this book because it was assigned in my Cultural Anthropology class. Goldstein assumes that you are a cultural anthropologist and understand all the jargon he throws at you. If you are from the studied region or a cultural anthropologist, you may enjoy this book. If you do not fall into either of those categories…it’s your call. |

| Shakespeare's Landlord (Lily Bard Mysteries, Book 1) Charlene Harris XPOSTED. |
[Nov. 11th, 2009|05:53 pm] |
Shakespeare's Landlord (Lily Bard Mysteries, Book 1) Charlene Harris
2/5. Lily is the main character in the book series. In the first book she finds someone placing a dead body near her house when she is out on her nightly, comforting walks. She doesnt want to bring attention to herself so she anonymously makes a call to the cheif of police who lives close by. Throughout this novel she finds herself trying to figure out who the murderer is while cleaning her many clients homes. She chose this job to keep to herself. She cant put her finger on the case but knows it must be solved for her to ever feel comfortable in her small town again. Of course a book like this needs some romance. She finds herself involved with her instructor. Lily has learned how to protect herself because of her unforgetful past. She cant seem to put it behind her. Someone in her small town is letting her know they know about her past as well by trying to spook her. Through out the book Lily is trying to understand her liking of Marshall, find the town killer, and make sure her past remains hidden.
I was impressed with this book after I was about 75% through it. (Not sure about page number due to reading it on the kindle.) I had started it and was a little down about the plot but then it started getting better. I would have probably given the book a 3 if it hadnt taken me so long to get to a part I really enjoyed. Once I did though, I was on edge. I have already read 2 more books of this series and am on my fourth. I will post another review tomorrow on book 2. |

Alright, I'm applying to an MLS program soon and am trying to explore a couple different career paths.
I'm looking for experiences, typical days, if the job is actually in demand, etc. with the following:
Public (any of the following:) *YA/Childrens *Adult Services/ Reference
Academic *Archives
School Media: *K-12
Any help would be appreciated!
As for some info on me, I'm 22, my favorite genre is YA lit., I don't particularly like children but am devoted to getting more kids reading and not made fun of, and I'm interested in archives because of the solitude, and I enjoy what little I know of preservation (I make phase boxes often at my current job for rare/decaying books), buuut I'm terrible at Access and databases. Like, terrible. I'm not actually that good at computer stuff. :/ |

| New Four Star Daydream |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|10:24 pm] |
Oh, hi! I'm back!
It's been three years since I made an issue of Four Star Daydream. I had the wonderful chance to be in Richmond during the Richmond Zine Fest so I reserved a table and got to work on FSD #10.
& here it is!
 Four Star Daydream #10 16 pages // 1/4 size
This zine contains ten one-hundred word stories about my adventures on the road and at home. The intro is one-hundred words, too! Very simple layout and text heavy.
$1 & a lovely note to:
Fawne DeRosia P.O. Box 805 Thomaston, GA 30286
I have past issues on Etsy. You're welcome to order those zines via snail mail also!
Trades are welcome!
P.S. How awesome was the Richmond Zine Fest? I enjoyed having a table and being surrounded by other zine-makers (even when my table decided to collapse!). |

| Request to record our Story Time |
[Nov. 9th, 2009|11:22 pm] |
|
Has anyone else had strangers from other cities call and ask if they can tape your library's story time for an audio recording? I am just uncomfortable allowing strangers to record our story teller and the kids who are attending and not be able to tell me exactly for what they will use this said recording. Has anyone else had this type of request? If so did you try to notify your regular story time groups ahead of time? Was it very distracting to the kids? Thanks! |

| Looking for blogs for non-english book recommendations |
[Nov. 9th, 2009|05:13 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | thoughtful | ] | Hello! This question is prompted by a class assignmint, but I'm hoping that any answers I get will be useful to many people.
Is anyone aware of any blogs or websites that recommend books in languages other than English? I'm especially interested in sites that recommend fiction, but anything will do. I don't have any particular user group in mind in terms of age or reading ability.
I don't have an interest in any particular language as a result of my assignment, although I'd certainly prefer sites that are in English or are bilingual so that I can understand what I'm looking at. If you do have a good source that's not in English, please describe the contents a little bit. Even if I can't use it, someone else might!
Thanks in advance! |

--An Excerpt From Today's Conversation With IT: IT Guy: Did the software at any point prompt you to upgrade? Me: Err, no. IT Guy: Did you go to their website and download something? Me: Noooo... IT Guy: Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party? Me: *cracks up*
-- valis2 got me thinking about how one could realistically write Mulder/Vetinari, and I started imagining an X-Files-set-in-Discworld AU. It would have to be set pre-Discworld series, I think, with Mulder working for the at-that-time extremely-crap Night Watch, and being an outcast conspiracy theorist even from that. He would be convinced that Vetinari is part of an alien cover-up, and try to get close to him to glean information. Vetinari does of course know everything (left ambiguous to the reader whether there are actually aliens or not) and manipulates Mulder in order to hasten the departure of Mad Lord Snapcase. And of course Vetinari is crafty enough to keep Mulder hanging around by dropping tidbits of secrets, but never telling too much, which would allow the writer to maintain their tumultuous relationship up through the existing Discworld books.
Um. I'm not writing this. But it should exist.
--Does anybody know anything about Words on the Wind? It appears to be a fanfic awards site, using the same code/terminology as the Children of Time Awards, but focusing on paranormal/supernatural fandoms. Is it run by the same person? Is there any associated drama I should be worried about? I mean, I guess I'm never going to say no to being nominated for things.
--I'm kind of getting into Muse, at the moment. |
